Concertina Wire Installation at a Secure Government Facility in British Columbia

Executive Summary

DeTurd installed a double-coil barbed tape concertina (BTC) system along existing perimeter fencing at a secure government facility in British Columbia. The project combined custom fabrication and field installation to add a physical security barrier while accommodating different mounting conditions, fence posts and lighting infrastructure.

The facility’s identity, exact location and detailed security specifications are not disclosed for privacy and security reasons.

Location: British Columbia; facility not identified.
Scope: BTC installation along existing perimeter fencing.
Key challenge: Supporting the new barrier across different mounting conditions while managing installation safety.
Solution: Purpose-built brackets, site-specific support configurations and coordinated installation planning.

The Challenge: Upgrading an Existing Perimeter

The requirement was to install a double-coiled BTC system along the top of the existing fence. The challenge was making that system work with infrastructure already in place.

Mounting conditions varied along the perimeter. Some locations could accommodate a bracket at the top of an existing fence post; others required a different configuration to work around a light post or connect to the existing structure.

The installation also needed to meet the client’s specified security standards. That meant assessing the fence as a series of different mounting situations, rather than treating the entire perimeter as a uniform installation.

The Solution: Custom-Fabricated Supports

DeTurd assessed the existing conditions and developed purpose-built support brackets for the different locations. The brackets connected the new BTC system to the existing infrastructure while maintaining a consistent overall installation.

Locations around light posts received a specific bracket configuration. This allowed the support system to accommodate the site rather than forcing a standard arrangement where it did not fit.

Planning the brackets and installation sequence together reduced the need to improvise in the field and helped organize the work before the crew arrived on site.

Installation Planning and Safety

Safety was the project’s primary installation challenge. The work combined handling sharp security material with installation at the top of an existing perimeter fence.
DeTurd considered access, material handling, the work area and installation sequence together. Safety planning was part of the installation approach from the outset, alongside the need to work around existing posts and lighting infrastructure.

The team worked within the client’s specified security requirements while adapting the installation to the different site conditions.

The Result: An Integrated Security Barrier

The completed BTC system follows the existing perimeter and accommodates its different structural and mounting conditions. Custom brackets provide support at the required locations, including around existing posts and lighting infrastructure.

The result was an installation that met the client’s requirements and integrated the new barrier into the existing fencing, rather than replacing the perimeter.

What This Project Demonstrates

For contractors, facility managers and security or project managers, this project demonstrates DeTurd’s ability to connect custom fabrication with practical field installation. The work required more than supplying wire: it called for site assessment, adapted support solutions and careful installation planning.

Commercial and industrial bird control remains DeTurd’s core business. This project applied the team’s broader fabrication, access and problem-solving capabilities to a specialized perimeter-security installation.
